Monterey Accelerated Research System - Cabled Ocean Observatory

The Monterey Accelerated Research System (MARS) consists of a 52-km (32-mile) undersea cable that carries data and power to a science node on the deep seafloor. Science experiments can be attached to the science node using ROV (remotely operated vehicles) wet mate data/power connectors and extension cables up to four kilometers long. The MARS science node is located on the seafloor at a depth of 891 meters (2,923 feet) below the ocean surface, on Smooth Ridge, about 25 kilometers west-northwest of Monterey.

L3 MariPro, under contract to the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI), participated as an industrial partner along with other MBARI team members Alcatel-Lucent, NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), University of Washington and Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI).

L3 MariPro engineers designed, qualified, manufactured and delivered the ROV deployable and recoverable MARS science node, which is comprised of the Trawl-Resistant Frame (TRF) and the science node itself. The science node sits inside the TRF, a large, orange steel frame, which protects the science node from potential hits from trawler boards used by fishermen and also interfaces the science node to the backbone cable via a Cable Termination Assembly (CTA) that was supplied by Alcatel-Lucent. The science node is comprised of a near neutrally buoyant float, backbone structure, titanium pressure vessels, science harnesses and connectors, thermal management system and active electronic mounting hardware within the pressure vessels.
