Stabilized Platform Systems

L3 KEO has designed and manufactured state-of-the-art surface ship optronic sights and other stabilized platforms for a variety of applications.

First installed aboard a U.S. Navy DDG 51 class destroyer in 1992, L3 KEO's MK46 set the industry standard for electro-optical tracking and fire control systems, with over seventy systems delivered. The system, which includes a daylight TV camera, a 3-5 micron thermal imager, an eye-safe laser rangefinder and stabilization accuracy to 30 microradians, has also been installed on the Cruiser USS Yorktown.

In 2005, L3-KEO won a competitive procurement to provide the U.S. Navy with an Electro-Optical Sensor System (EOSS) to fulfill the needs of the Cruiser (Ticonderoga class) Modernization Program. Building on the proven MK46 Optical Sight System, the MK20 MOD 0 EOSS was designed to incorporate the latest technologies into a proven baseline.  Among the state-of-art features that were incorporated are full digital stabilization with high reliability fiber-optic gyros, a separate eyesafe laser rangefinder LRU that incorporates a longlife diode-pumped laser with an increased rep rate and increased ranging performance, improved BIT and maintainability features, as well as excellent sensor to sensor boresight alignment.

In 2011, L3 KEO delivered the first MK20 capable of distributing low-latency digital video and was awarded a follow-on production contract to put MK20 systems on both modernized and new construction Arleigh Burke destroyers.

Other products designed and produced for defense applications include:

  • Surveillance radar pedestals for land or shipboard applications
  • Submarine radar modules for housing and control of navigation and/or LPI radars
  • Custom design electric drive systems, including the Towed Array Handling motors and controller and propulsion drives for ASDS

In addition, Calzoni, a subsidiary of L3 KEO designs and manufactures Minehunter Autopilot and Propulsion Systems, Helicopter Handling Systems, Weapon Handling Systems, and stabilized Launch and Recovery Cranes.
