Environmental Testing Services

Emphasizing Reliability Through Test

For over 65 years L3 CS-East has managed and performed testing programs on products which range from individual components to complete systems. Testing capabilities are available for engineering confidence, environmental qualification, and reliability acceptance testing of commercial, industrial, tactical, shipboard, aircraft and space equipment.

Our laboratory offers full-service expertise in test preparation, testing, instrumentation, evaluation and documentation. The laboratory is certified to ISO9001:2008 and AS9100 Quality Management Standards. Some standards tests are:

  • IEC 60068

  • MIL-HDBK-781

  • MIL-STD-167

  • MIL-STD-202
  • MIL-STD-810

  • MIL-STD-883

  • MIL-STD-1540

  • MIL-STD-2036

  • MIL-STD-5400

  • NAVMAT P-9492

  • RTCA D0-160

  • SAE AS5678

Our Environmental Test Laboratory is currently equipped with a vast array of test chambers for climatic testing, including temperature, altitude, humidity, vacuum and leak detection. Our environmental chambers and facilities can accommodate a variety of specimens, handle temperatures from -73 °C to +150 °C, altitudes up to 1x106 Torr and relative humidity from 20% to 95%. Most chambers are microprocessor-controlled and are equipped with fail-safe controllers to ensure specimen safety.

The laboratory also operates facilities for dynamic testing that employs an electro-dynamic shaker capable of sine and random vibration within a frequency range of 5 Hz to 2,000 Hz and outputs of 15,000 force pounds for sine and 12,000 force pounds for random vibration. This system has fully automatic computer controls for both types of testing. In addition, precision shock simulations are conducted on a fixed pulse machine that generates half-sine and sawtooth pulses with amplitudes ranging from 2 Gs to 100 Gs, durations from 6 to 50 ms and payloads up to 1,000 lb. Shock response spectrum is available for most pulses.

Our capabilities also include a Highly Accelerated Life Testing (HALT) chamber that provides simultaneous rapid temperature cycling and vibration in six degrees of freedom (three translational and three rotational axes). HALT involves the use of these combined thermal and vibration stimuli to expose a product to high levels of stress in order to precipitate failures that result from design weaknesses, limiting margins and latent defects. These tests can be a valuable tool when used to find any "marginal designs" in a product's prototype or first-run stage of development. HALT testing leads to equipment robustness and thereby improving overall product reliability.
