Human Injury Detection & Prevention

Prevention of injury to military service members is a top priority of military leaders regarding all perspectives: training, operational effectiveness, post-service life quality, and medical care. Never before in our country’s history has there been such a concerted effort to understand and prevent injury in a military environment.

ATI offers one of the most broad-based research and development centers for addressing the issues associated with human injury. Our 50+ staff of experts in the sciences, engineering, biomechanics, fluid dynamics, and neurosciences are able to tackle the most complex human interaction in a hostile environment and produce practical results, based on the highest quality medical research.
Our specialties include:

  • Models of the body’s response and injury risk from exposure to blasts, blunt trauma, toxic gases, environmental extremes, and other external threats

  • Models of the interaction of protective gear with the body, including gas masks, helmets, body armor and clothing

  • Models of the physiological response of the body to threats, environment, burden, and tasks, including endurance limits

  • Extensive laboratory test facilities for recreating a wide range of blast and blunt trauma exposures for evaluating the response and effectiveness of protective gear and materials

  • Comprehensive field test capability to conduct blast test exposures under realistic conditions, yet with state-of-the art instrumentation

  • Capability to design, develop, deploy, and evaluate “smart sensors” that couple real-time measurement with state-of-the-art assessment tools for injury and physiological stress

ATI’s long history of research and development in the areas of human injury prevention have supported the country’s major medical agencies

  • The U.S. Army Medical Research and Materiel Command and its research directorates and affiliates

    • Military Operational Medicine Research Program (MOMRP)

    • Combat Casualty Care Research Program (CCC)

    • U.S. Army Research Institute for Environmental Medicine (USARIEM)
    • Walter Reed Army Institute of Research (WRAIR)

    • U.S. Army Aeromedical Research Laboratory (USAARL)

    • Telemedicine and Advanced Research Center (TATRC)

    • Center for the Intrepid

  • Department of Defense joint medical and human injury activities

    • DOD Blast Injury Medical Research Program Coordinating Office (Blast PCO)

    • Joint Assessment and Prevention of Injury in Combat (JTAPIC)
